File Search
Searches your disk for files by name or by content. With a pool of ready-made regex patterns you can find specific file types or content patterns in one click.
What it does
Use this to find a forgotten PDF in old folders, list files of a given kind in bulk (images, videos, music, documents, archives), search for a phrase inside files, or find patterns such as an email address or phone number inside documents.
How to use
There are two search modes:
By file name
Type what you are looking for. The kind of input (glob, regex or substring) is detected automatically. For example *.pdf is treated as a glob, \d{4}_report as a regex, and plain report as a substring.
By file content
Looks inside the file instead of at its name. Type the text or pattern you want, and files whose content matches are listed.
Ready-made regex patterns
You can pick common patterns in one click:
- Type filters (file-name mode): Images, Videos, Music, Documents, Archives. One click lists every file of that kind.
- Content patterns (content mode): Email, URL, IP address, Phone, National ID. One click searches for these patterns inside files.
Folders searched
By default it searches the Desktop, Documents and Downloads folders. You can add any folder to this list or remove the existing ones.
Examples
Find an old contract PDF: By file name mode, type contract*.pdf, results appear.
List every image in a folder: By file name mode, click Images from the ready-made patterns.
Find email addresses in documents: By file content mode, click Email from the ready-made patterns.
Find a document containing a phrase: By file content mode, type the phrase you want.
Watch out
- Content search is slower on big files and folders with many files.
- If you want to search outside the default folders, remember to add the relevant folder to the list.
- Search results are not stored on disk, clicking a hit opens the actual file.
- Protected system folders may be off-limits.
