Metadata Audit

Inspects, strips, reports on and writes hidden metadata across many file types (images, PDFs, Office, audio, video).

What it does

Use this to see and bulk-strip hidden personal-data traces (location, author, device, dates) from files, audit a folder for what metadata each file carries, bulk-write metadata such as title, author and tags to the files in a folder, or run a privacy review for GDPR/KVKK compliance.

How to use

The tool has these tabs:

Inspect

Drag a single file, see every EXIF, XMP, IPTC, PDF metadata, Office property, audio/video tag inside it.

Scrub

  1. Add many files.
  2. Pick fields to strip (author, location, date, etc.) or "Strip All".
  3. Click Scrub.

Write

  1. Pick a folder.
  2. Fill in the fields to write: title, author, subject, tags, copyright, comment, album, genre, year.
  3. Click Write. The metadata is written in bulk to the supported files in the folder.

Each format uses only the fields it supports. Supported formats: images (JPG, WebP, TIFF, via EXIF), PDF, audio (MP3, FLAC, M4A, OGG).

Batch Report

  1. Pick a folder.
  2. Click Scan.
  3. You get a metadata summary across every file, showing which ones contain sensitive data.

What can be seen and stripped

  • Image: EXIF (camera, GPS, date), XMP, IPTC.
  • PDF: /Info dictionary, XMP.
  • Office: Core properties (author, title), App properties, custom properties.
  • Audio: ID3, Vorbis, MP4 tags.
  • Video: Container and stream metadata (via ffprobe).

Writable fields

The Write tab bulk-writes these fields: title, author, subject, tags, copyright, comment, album, genre, year. Writing works on images (JPG/WebP/TIFF EXIF), PDF and audio (MP3/FLAC/M4A/OGG). Each format only writes the fields it supports, for example album/genre/year go to audio files and copyright goes to images.

Examples

Inspect one photo's metadata: Inspect tab, drag the photo. EXIF, GPS, camera info appear.

Privacy report for a folder: Batch Report, pick the folder, scan. See which files have GPS, which have author info.

Strip 50 photos before social posting: Scrub tab, add the photos, tick Strip All, scrub.

Bulk-tag the songs in an album: Write tab, pick the folder, fill in album/author/year, write.

Write copyright info to photos: Write tab, pick the image folder, fill in copyright and author, write.

Watch out

  • Some formats need extra libraries installed: Pillow (image), pypdf (PDF), mutagen (audio), ffprobe (video).
  • Video metadata is read-only, scrubbing and writing are not yet supported.
  • Scrubbing and writing overwrite the original file, copy first if you want backups.
  • Stripping or writing metadata on digitally signed documents invalidates the signature.
  • Batch reports and bulk writes on large folders can take minutes.
